Investing in Our Future: Youth and the Hunting Heritage

The future of hunting, conservation, and wildlife stewardship depends on the next generation. If we want to preserve the traditions, values, and responsibilities that come with being an ethical hunter, we must actively involve young people in the outdoors. The more we expose youth to the benefits of hunting, the better chance we have of ensuring our hunting heritage thrives for generations to come.

At Redwood County Pheasants Forever, we believe that cultivating responsible, ethical hunters is a community effort. It’s up to all of us—mentors, parents, conservation groups, and organizations—to provide meaningful experiences that educate, inspire, and equip young hunters with the skills they need. Fortunately, there are two incredible opportunities right here in our own backyard that do just that: Forkhorn Camp at Prairie Woods Environmental Learning Center and Upland Bird Camp at Deep Portage Learning Center.

Forkhorn Camp: Building a Strong Foundation

Forkhorn Camp, hosted at Prairie Woods Environmental Learning Center, is the perfect opportunity for youth ages 11-15 to learn the basics of hunting while earning their MN DNR Firearm Safety Certificate.

This immersive camp is ideal for beginners and youth who learn best through hands-on experiences. Campers receive expert instruction in:

  • Rifle, shotgun, and archery safety and shooting techniques
  • Whitetail deer ecology and conservation
  • Outdoor survival skills
  • Hunter’s ethics and responsibility

In addition to these essential skills, campers participate in fun, traditional camp activities such as canoeing and rock climbing. By the end of camp, each participant leaves with a solid foundation in hunting, safety, and ethical decision-making.

Upland Bird Camp: Next-Level Hunting Skills

For youth ages 12-16 who want to take their hunting knowledge to the next level, Upland Bird Camp at Deep Portage Learning Center is an amazing experience. This camp focuses on upland bird hunting and offers:

  • Daily wing shooting instruction on a 10-station sporting clay course
  • Dog training techniques, including handling and working with trained hunting dogs
  • Lessons in upland bird biology, hunting ethics, and conservation
  • A field trip to Pine Shadows Kennel, where campers learn firsthand from professional dog trainers

A highlight of Upland Bird Camp is when each camper is given a puppy to handle for 45 minutes, helping them understand how to care for and train young dogs. By the end of camp, each participant will have gone through a full case of shells on the shooting course, ensuring ample shooting practice.

Why This Matters

Hunting is more than a sport—it’s a way of life that teaches responsibility, patience, and respect for the land and wildlife. Camps like Forkhorn and Upland Bird Camp instill these values in young hunters and help them gain confidence in the field.

By investing in youth hunting education, we’re ensuring that the next generation will respect conservation efforts, engage in ethical hunting practices, and pass these traditions on. If you know a young outdoor enthusiast, encourage them to attend one of these camps. It’s an experience that will shape their future—and the future of hunting.
