Redwood County Pheasants Forever is a proud supporter of our area youth trap shooting teams including high school trap and 4-H shooting sports.
Youth Trap Shooting is Still Booming
Starting in 2019 more Minnesota students shot on a trap team than played high school hockey according to the Minnesota DNR. In 2023, more than 8,000 athletes competed in the clay target league trap shooting championships held in Alexandria, Minnesota at the Alexandria Shooting Park. This impressive event features 20 trap fields with more than 300 Minnesota teams.
It’s a Sport for Everyone!
The beauty of high school trap shooting is that it provides opportunity for athletes of all abilities to compete on an equal playing field. There are nine classes of participants in the Minnesota State High School Clay Target League trap shooting program and include both individual and team competition opportunities. Competition format includes classification (Novice, JV and Varsity) which goes off of what the student’s average is. It is also a co-curricular activity allowing both males and females to compete on the same field. The clay target league does not permit limits on sizes of teams which fuels the ability for everyone to participate.
Continuing Our Legacy
Minnesota High School trap shooting allows a great number of our state’s youth to be exposed to the joy that shooting sports can bring while still helping everyone understand that this is a safe sport. High School clay target shooting is safer than any other high school sport. With more than 120,000 participants across the country since 2008, in an estimated 75 million trigger pulls, there have been zero injuries or safety incidents. Trap shooting continues to be a safe sport because of dedicated coaches and volunteers passing on their knowledge to help students understand the value of safety. This helps foster the next generation of safe hunters and sportsmen.
Redwood County Pheasants Forever’s Contribution to Supporting Youth Trap Shooting
For several years, Redwood County Pheasants Forever has supported all the trap teams in Redwood County (Red Rock Central, Wabasso, Redwood Falls and Morgan) with donations of ammunition. Each athlete receives a case of shotgun shells for their shooting season to help reduce the cost burden to the family for participating. These are your dollars at work; encouraging the next generation to enjoy shooting sports as much as we do!
