A Major Win for Local Habitat: Coal Mine Creek WMA Expansion Complete

Home » A Major Win for Local Habitat: Coal Mine Creek WMA Expansion Complete

We are thrilled to celebrate a significant milestone for conservation in Redwood County. Pheasants Forever has officially finalized the acquisition of 234 additional acres for the Coal Mine Creek Wildlife Management Area (WMA).

This expansion isn't just about adding land; it’s about honoring our hunting heritage. By protecting this acreage, Pheasants Forever has ensured that the traditions of the field—the early mornings, the working dogs, and the pursuit of wild birds—have a permanent home. This project strengthens the bond between our community and the land, guaranteeing that future generations have the same opportunities to explore the outdoors that we enjoy today.

Expanding Our Public Access

The Coal Mine Creek WMA has long been a cornerstone for local hunters and outdoor enthusiasts. With this $2.7 million investment, the footprint of available public land has grown substantially. This acquisition provides:

  • Expanded Room to Roam: More public acreage for hunting, trapping, and wildlife viewing, reducing pressure on existing lands.
  • Contiguous Habitat: Research shows that large, connected blocks of nesting cover and winter protection provide exponential benefits for pheasant populations compared to small, isolated patches.
  • Permanent Protection: This land is now shielded from development forever, preserved as a wild space for the public to enjoy.

National Strength, Local Impact

While our local Redwood County chapter remains dedicated to the mission, this specific achievement was driven by the national Pheasants Forever organization. It is a powerful example of how being part of a larger movement brings significant resources back to our own backyard.

The successful completion of this project is a testament to the power of the "The Habitat Organization." It shows that the funds and support generated by members across the country result in tangible, high-quality habitat right here in Redwood County.

A Legacy Secured

The acquisition is complete, the maps are set, and the land is protected. This expansion stands as a permanent victory for conservation and a celebration of our shared outdoor values. We are proud to see this level of investment in our local landscape, ensuring that the whistle of a rooster pheasant remains a staple of the Redwood County horizon for years to come.
